What's Your Grief Lyric?
Creative Coping : Eleanor Haley
/We recently asked the WYG community on Instagram the following question:
Choose one song lyric or verse to express the grief you're feeling right now, in this moment. What is it?
Now, if you've been following WYG for a while, you may think this question is a repeat because, in the past, we asked a similar question: What is the saddest song on your grief playlist? That being the case, do we really need another post about grief music?
Obviously, we think the answer is "yes."
We're going to draw the slightest of distinctions here because the focus of our most recent conversation was on the single grief verse or lyric that's resonating with you right now, in this moment.
The answer to this will change drastically from day-to-day, and possibly even moment-to-moment. Think about it. No, seriously, we encourage you to take a second and ask yourself what grief lyric speaks to you in this moment? If you know your answer, share it with us in the comments below.
Below, you will find most of the lyrics submitted to us via Instagram. If we were able to figure out what song the lyric came from, we added it to the list. If you submitted a lyric and notice that it is attributed to the wrong song, please let us know. If you'd like to listen to all of these songs, we've compiled them onto a Spotify playlist at the end of this post.

Your presence still lingers here
And it won’t leave me alone
These wounds won’t seem to heal, this pain is just too real,
There’s just too much that time cannot erase. – My Immortal
And I am so overwhelmed
By a thousand broken wings,
So close your eyes, but don’t dream too deep,
And please pass me some memories,
And when I fall you’re underneath
A thousand broken hearts
Carried by a thousand broken wings.
Broken Wings – Flyleaf

I’ll see you when I see you
Oh this may be
But I won’t love you when I love you
No that will always stay the same
I won’t feel you when I feel you
‘Cause I feel you every day
But I’ll see you when I see you

Forever Young
Rod Stewart
May the good Lord be with you down every road you roam.
And may sunshine and happiness surround you when you’re far from home.
And my you grow to be proud, dignified and true.
And do unto others as you’d have done to you.
Be courageous and be brave.
And in my heart you’ll always stay
Forever young. (Forever young)
Forever young. (Forever young)
May good fortune be with you, may your guiding light be strong,
Build a stairway to heaven with a prince or a vagabond.
And may you never love in vain.
And in my heart you will remain
Forever young. (Forever young)
Forever young. (Forever young)
Forever young. Forever young
And when you fin’lly fly away, I’ll be hoping that I served you well.
For all the wisdom of a lifetime, no one can ever tell.
But whatever road you choose, I’m right behind you win or lose,
Forever young. (Forever young)
Forever young. (Forever young)
Forever young. Forever young
For forever young

U2 – Where The Streets Have No Name
Lyrics
I want to run, I want to hide
I wanna tear down the walls that hold me inside
I wanna reach out and touch the flame
Where the streets have no name, ha, ha, ha
I wanna feel sunlight on my face
I see that dust cloud disappear without a trace
I wanna take shelter from the poison rain
Where the streets have no name, oh, oh
Where the streets have no name
Where the streets have no name
We’re still building then burning down love
Burning down love
And when I go there, I go there with you
It’s all I can do
The city’s a flood
And our love turns to rust
We’re beaten and blown by the wind
Trampled in dust
I’ll show you a place
High on the desert plain, yeah
Where the streets have no name, oh, oh
Where the streets have no name
Where the streets have no name
We’re still building then burning down love
Burning down love
And when I go there, I go there with you
It’s all I can do
Our love turns to rust
We’re beaten and blown by the wind
Blown by the wind
Oh, and I see love
See our love turn to rust
Oh, we’re beaten and blown by the wind
Blown by the wind
Oh, when I go there
I go there with you
It’s all I can do

Symphony
by Clean Bandit
I’ve been hearing symphonies
Before all I heard was silence
A rhapsody for you and me
And every melody is timeless
Life was stringing me along
Then you came and you cut me loose
Was solo singing on my own
Now I can’t find the key without you
And now your song is on repeat
And I’m dancin’ on to your heartbeat
And when you’re gone, I feel incomplete
So if you want the truth
I just wanna be part of your symphony
Will you hold me tight and not let go?
Symphony
Like a love song on the radio
Will you hold me tight and not let go?
I’m sorry if it’s all too much
Every day you’re here, I’m healing
And I was runnin’ out of luck
I never thought I’d find this feeling
‘Cause I’ve been hearing symphonies
Before all I heard was silence
A rhapsody for you and me
(A rhapsody for you and me)
And every melody is timeless
And now your song is on repeat
And I’m dancin’ on to your heartbeat
And when you’re gone, I feel incomplete
So if you want the truth
I just wanna be part of your symphony
Will you hold me tight and not let go?
Symphony
Like a love song on the radio
Will you hold me tight and not let go?
Ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah
Ah ah, ah
Ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah
Ah ah, ah
And now your song is on repeat
And I’m dancin’ on to your heartbeat
And when you’re gone, I feel incomplete
So if you want the truth
(Oh, oh, oh)
I just wanna be part of your symphony
Will you hold me tight and not let go?

Who can say for certain
Maybe you’re still here
I feel you all around me
Your memories so clear
Deep in the stillness
I can hear you speak
You’re still an inspiration
Can it be…

Just yesterday morning they let me know you were gone,
Suzanne, the plans they made put an end to you . . .
Oh, I’ve seen fire & I’ve seen rain. I’ve seen sunny days that I thought would never end.
I’ve seen lonely times when I could not find a friend, but I always thought that I’d see you again.

They are all gone into the world of light!
And I alone sit ling’ring here;
Their very memory is fair and bright,
And my sad thoughts doth clear.
It glows and glitters in my cloudy breast,
Like stars upon some gloomy grove,
Or those faint beams in which this hill is drest,
After the sun’s remove.
I see them walking in an air of glory,
Whose light doth trample on my days:
My days, which are at best but dull and hoary,
Mere glimmering and decays.
O holy Hope! and high Humility,
High as the heavens above!
These are your walks, and you have show’d them me
To kindle my cold love.
Dear, beauteous Death! the jewel of the just,
Shining nowhere, but in the dark;
What mysteries do lie beyond thy dust
Could man outlook that mark!
He that hath found some fledg’d bird’s nest, may know
At first sight, if the bird be flown;
But what fair well or grove he sings in now,
That is to him unknown.
And yet as angels in some brighter dreams
Call to the soul, when man doth sleep:
So some strange thoughts transcend our wonted themes
And into glory peep.
If a star were confin’d into a tomb,
Her captive flames must needs burn there;
But when the hand that lock’d her up, gives room,
She’ll shine through all the sphere.
O Father of eternal life, and all
Created glories under thee!
Resume thy spirit from this world of thrall
Into true liberty.
Either disperse these mists, which blot and fill
My perspective still as they pass,
Or else remove me hence unto that hill,
Where I shall need no glass.

Nights don’t come any longer
Days seem to last forever
Nothing you can do
Could bring him back to you
Forever blue
Trying hard to force a smile behind your tears
Though you try these memories won’t disappear
Your heart’s still beating out of time
Memories don’t come stronger
Dreams lost and gone forever
Softly whispering
Won’t bring him back to you
Forever blue
Close your eyes but you still see, though love is blind
Though you try just can’t leave the past behind
He’s on your mind
You’ll forget him
Like he forgot you
Nothing you could do
Could bring him back to you
You’ll be forever blue

Her by Anne-Marie
When I think of my mother, no one compares to her
A love like no other, she puts everyone else first
And when I was younger, I treated her the worst
Never known someone stronger, ’cause damn, it must have hurt
I don’t see you as much as I used to
But if I did, I know what I would do
I’d tell you I love you a million times
Say that I’m sorry if I made you cry
Could never be half the woman even if I tried
But I’ll try, I swear I’ll try
If someone puts me down, yeah I know my worth
All thanks to you, the lessons that I’ve learned
If I had to put it into words
I think of an angel and all I see is her, mm-all
All I see is her, hmm
Your voice in my head, it—it tells me I’m beautiful
And when I have children, I’ll pass on the things I was told
I don’t see you as much as I used to
But if I did, I know what I would do
I’d tell you I love you a million times
Say that I’m sorry if I made you cry
Could never be half the woman even if I tried
But I’ll try, I swear I’ll try
If someone puts me down, yeah, I know my worth
It’s all thanks to you, the lessons that I’ve learned
If I had to put it into words
I think of an angel and all I see is her, mm-all
All I see is her, hmm
And all I see is her

I Just Don’t Think I’ll Ever Get Over You – Colin Hay
I drink good coffee every morning
It comes from a place that’s far away
And when I’m done I feel like talking
Without you here there is less to say
Don’t want you thinking I’m unhappy
What is closer to the truth
Is that if I lived ’till I was a hundred and two
I just don’t think I’ll ever get over you
Dan Janich August 27, 2020 at 6:07 pm
The song is “Something to Get Through” by Willie Nelson.
Something You Get Through
Willie Nelson
When you lose the one you love
You think your world has ended
You think your world will be a waste of life
Without them in it
You feel there’s no way to go on
Life is just a sad, sad song
But love is bigger than us all
The end is not the end at all
It’s not somethin’ you get over
But it’s somethin’ you get through
It’s not ours to be taken
It’s just a thing we get to do
Life goes on and on
And when it’s gone
It lives in someone new
It’s not somethin’ you get over
But it’s somethin’ you get through

Also, the poem that will always take it home:
W.H. Auden
Funeral Blues
Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone,
Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone,
Silence the pianos and with muffled drum
Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come.
Let aeroplanes circle moaning overhead
Scribbling on the sky the message ‘He is Dead’.
Put crepe bows round the white necks of the public doves,
Let the traffic policemen wear black cotton gloves.
He was my North, my South, my East and West,
My working week and my Sunday rest,
My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song;
I thought that love would last forever: I was wrong.
The stars are not wanted now; put out every one,
Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun,
Pour away the ocean and sweep up the wood;
For nothing now can ever come to any good.

You and me against the world,
Sometimes it seems like you and me against the world,
When all the others turn their backs and walked away,
You can count on me to stay.
And when one of us is gone,
And one of us is left to carry on,
Then remembering will have to do,
Our memories alone will get us through
Think about the days of me and you,
Of you and me against the world.

Dancing in the Sky
By Dani and Lizzy
Tell me, what does it look like in heaven?
Is it peaceful? Is it free like they say?
Does the sun shine bright forever?
Have your fears and your pain gone away?
‘Cause here on earth it feels like
Everything good is missing since you left
And here on earth everything’s different
There’s an emptiness
Oh, oh, I
I hope you’re dancing in the sky
And I hope you’re singing in the angel’s choir
And I hope the angels know what they have
I’ll bet it’s so nice up in heaven since you arrived
So tell me, what do you do up in heaven?
Are your days filled with love and light?
Is there music? Is there art and adventure?
Tell me are you happy? Are you more alive?
‘Cause here on earth it feels like
Everything good is missing since you left
And here on earth everything’s different
There’s an emptiness
Oh, oh, I
I hope you’re dancing in the sky
And I hope you’re singing in the angel’s choir
And I hope the angels know what they have
I’ll bet it’s so nice up in heaven since you arrived
Since you arrived

Hi,
the whole album by Sufjan Stevens “Carrie & Lowell” is his manifestation of grieve and adaptation process to his mother’s death.
Here, I expose an excerpt of “The only thing”
The only thing that keeps me from driving this car
Half-light, jack knife into the canyon at night
Signs and wonders: Perseus aligned with the skull
Slain Medusa, Pegasus alight from us all
Do I care if I survive this? Bury the dead where they’re found
In a veil of great surprises; I wonder, did you love me at all?
The only thing that keeps me from cutting my arm
Cross hatch, warm bath, Holiday Inn after dark
Signs and wonders: water stain riding the wall
Daniel’s message: blood of the moon on us all
Do I care if I despise this? Nothing else matters, I know
In a veil of great disguises; how do I live with your ghost?
Should I tear my eyes out now?
Everything I see returns to you, somehow
Should I tear my heart out now?
Everything I feel returns to you, somehow
I want to save you from your sorrow

Instrumental: In A Spanish Mood by The Aqua Velvets. Contemplative melancholy.
Complicated deaths, he/she had an affair, anger/grief, getting free of any toxic relationship:
Slightly Hung Over, a slow beautiful blues number by Blues Delight and
On The Road Again by Canned Heat, sung by Alan Wilson. if your mom was heartless/mentally ill.
Wayfaring Stranger by these two singers: Trace Adkins and version by Emmylou Harris
Kol Nidra – Jewish anthem of centuries of grief for the world, sung by Johnny Mathis at a young
age, he’s channeling something so deep. When you’re so soul weary you could scream at
deaths like suicide, or deaths of mystery.
Simple Man by Lynyrd Skynyrd – Midlife crisis: men. Business losses, betrayal of business partner.
Sometimes I Feel Like A Motherless Child – haven’t we all been here?
Little Wing by Jimi Hendrix – my spin on this is it’s about the spirit or angel of an innocent child, of either gender. “When I’m sad, she comes to me, with a thousand smiles she gives to me free….”

Into the West
Annie Lennox
Lay down
Your sweet and weary head
The night is falling
You have come to journey’s end
Sleep now
And dream of the ones who came before
They are calling
From across the distant shore
Why do you weep?
What are these tears upon your face?
Soon you will see
All of your fears will pass away
Safe in my arms
You’re only sleeping
What can you see
On the horizon?
Why do the white gulls call?
Across the sea
A pale moon rises
The ships have come to carry you home
And all will turn
To silver glass
A light on the water
All Souls pass
Hope fades
Into the world of night
Through shadows…

Did he see you from a long way off
Running to him with a Father’s heart
Did you wrap him up inside your arms
And let him know, that he’s home.

When you’re sad and when you’re lonely
And you haven’t got a friend
Just remember that death is not the end
And all that you held sacred
Falls down and does not mend
Just remember that death is not the end
Not the end, not the end
Just remember that death is not the end
When you’re standin’ on the crossroads
That you cannot comprehend
Just remember that death is not the end
And all your dreams have vanished
And you don’t know what’s up the bend
Just remember that death is not the end
– Bob Dylan, “Death Is Not the End”

If you ask me how I’m doin’
I would say I’m doin’ just fine
I would lie and say that you’re not on my mind
But I go out and I sit down at a table set for two (instead of three – my words)
And finally I’m forced to face the truth
No matter what I say I’m not over you.
“Not Over You” – Gavin DeGraw

Did you ever know that you’re my hero
And everything I would like to be?
I can fly higher than an eagle
For you are the wind beneath my wings
– Bette Midler. Wind beneath my wings.

There’s always some reason
To feel not good enough
And it’s hard at the end of the day
I need some distraction
Oh, beautiful release
Memories seep from my veins
Let me be empty
Oh, and weightless, and maybe
I’ll find some peace tonight

I cried so much working on this. All I want to do is sleep and forget.

Don’t tell me when I’m grieving
That this happened for a reason
Maybe one day we’ll talk about the dreams that had to die
For new ones to come alive
But not right now

Holding you,
I held everything.
And for a moment,
Wasn’t I the king?
But if I’d only known
How the king would fall
Hey, who’s to say?
You know,
I might’ve changed it all.
And now,
I’m glad I didn’t know
The way it all would end,
The way it all would go.
Our lives,
Are better left
To chance.
I could’ve missed the pain,
But, I’d have had to miss
the dance.

I cried for you
And the sky cried for you,
And when you went
I became a hopeless drifter.
But this life was not for you,
Though I learned from you,
That beauty need only be a whisper..

From Where You Are
Lifehouse
So far away from where you are
These miles have torn us worlds apart
And I miss you
Yeah, I miss you
So far away from where you are
Standing underneath the stars
And I wish you were here
I miss the years that were erased
I miss the way the sunshine would light up your face
I miss all the little things I never thought that they?d mean everything to me
Yeah, I miss you
And I wish you were here
I feel the beating of your heart
I see the shadows of your face
Just know that wherever you are
Yeah, I miss you
And I wish you were here
I miss the years that were erased
I miss the way the sunshine would…

But I believe you will
And someday your broken heart will mend
I know it will
And you will find your smile again …

See honey, I saw love, you see it came to me
It put its face up to my face so I could see
Yeah, then I saw love disfigure me
Into something I am not recognizing

If I had just one wish, it would be that you didn’t have to miss this. You should be here.
