A Grateful Farewell to 2013

General / General : Litsa Williams

2013 has been a rough year, to put it mildly. Like so many of you, we've had our ups and downs. If you've been here with us through the year, you've probably noticed that when life get tough, we get grateful.  Or at least we try. Sometimes we fail because, well... when life sucks, finding gratitude isn't always easy.   But we keep trying, because seeking gratitude is a legit tool, with our personal experience and scientific research to back it up. Research shows keeping a gratitude journal makes people happier, more optimistic, and keeps them working out longer and physically healthier.

So on this New Year's Day, we are welcoming 2014 with open arms. But lest we run from 2013 too quickly, we wanted to do a quick review of the gratitudes we found and shared throughout the year.  Hopefully it will keep us inspired to seek gratitude in 2014, and maybe it will inspire you to seek and document your gratitude. So here goes, in no particular order...

Stating the obvious, I am grateful for my children.
...for chocolate ice cream (obviously)
...for fortune cookies that tell me what I want to hear
for the beach...
for my morning coffee...
for a bottle of wine and a DVR full of my favorite TV shows...
for beautiful friends on their wedding day...
for my little brother who knows how to have a good time, 90s style
for car DVD players and silence
for a peach snowball on a Baltimore summer night
for Fourth of July weddings
for everyone who will understand I didn't feel grateful enough to come up with a gratitude yesterday
for my dog, who can always cheer me up after a rough day
for packing for a week long trip
for the hydrangeas I thought I killed that are now blooming
for the amazing Baltimore city views
to making faces with my nieces and nephews
for compromise. though our house still has no heat and is 45 degrees, we've agreed to heat the bedroom.
for sympathy cards that don't suck
for my quirky neighborhood and public art
for snuggly evenings with the girls
for my dog's stupid grin
for greeting cards that don't sugarcoat it
for this song, which made my whole day

I am grateful to have an amazing, inspiring, understanding, beautiful, smart and funny sister who’s blogs and website I can read and look at, at any time or place during the day (including a drs office waiting room that I’ve been waiting in for entirely too long) and be able to laugh, smile, cry, remember and relate too all at the same time and that always somehow manage to make me feel better or have a different outlook on my day. Oh yeah, im also grateful to realize how grateful I am to be able to sit in this waiting room and look at this site instead of nervously analyzing my checking account trying to figure out if I will make it to my next paycheck after paying for this appointment (which up until now has been my only memory of this officel). p.s. thanx mom 😉

Awww, thanks so much Arnie! When you put info out online you often don’t get to really know if it is helping people or not, so thank you SO much for taking the time to share. It really means a lot!! Wishing you continued healing in the new year.

I am definitely not sucking up. I am truly grateful for your website. It’s unexpectedly informative and has helped me to recognize that my grief-caused emotions are normal, and that I have not completely “lost it”. You do important work!
