Pretty much the entire album “But Here We Are” by Foo Fighters. It’s a split bw Dave Grohl’s mom Virginia and drummer Taylor Hawkins, who passed within months of each other. “Let it die”, “On The Mend” (re Taylor earlier in life in a coma), “Word Forward”. Dave write the bulk of lyrics in FF and these are obvious examples. He’s also written plenty of speculative stuff – often not explaining personal meaning in his songs.

“One Headlight” by The Wallflowers – According to the songwriter, Jakob Dylan, this song was intended as a metaphor about the “death of ideas.” However, it can just as easily be taken as a beautifully written elegy for the death of a close friend.

One of my favorite more recent ones is “They Don’t Know You Like I Do” by Imagine Dragons. I don’t really have a personal connection to it, but the story behind is song is heartbreaking.

Where we go when we die by Thornhill
“You speak of a world I knew
    Before we lost the air
    We all know the lie
    You let it die

    You speak of paradise
    Like it exists forever
    They all made you believe
    But I don’t think I want to

Well what’s the point of life?
    If we can’t be together
I need you here with me
    I need you to remember”

    Like love- the amity affliction
    “We could touch heaven
    As we kiss the stars
    I can forget myself
And make my way to where you are
We can fade away into the night
Close my eyes and I can feel alive

Drop it on the tongue like love
    Even though you know it
    Won’t be enough

Another star fell out of the sky
The night you took your own life
And so I drop it on the tongue like love
Even though I know it won’t be enough
I can crawl into your skin
I know the hell you were living in
    We touched heaven
    In the midst of hell
    We kissed the stars
    Before they fell

Drop it on the tongue like love
    Even though you know it
    Won’t be enough

    We touched heaven
    We touched heaven
    Touched heaven
    In the midst of hell
They don’t know the pain we’re in
The hurt just beneath the skin
    We touched heaven
    Touched heaven
    In the midst of hell

Drop it on the tongue like love
    Even though you know it
    Won’t be enough”

(my best friend committed suicide and the amity affliction was how we first started talking, they were both our fav band. Like love dropped recently and it was far too accurate…)

I just lost my best friend and significant other last year due to sever heat stroke, he was not able to be recusitated. He had been out there for hours with no water and no food and the someone had found him laying face down in his friends front yard when they had called for help but it was already to late he was already gone, He has helped me stay clean from self harm and from doing other things but now I am alone and he is gone because of selfless people back in MO that didn’t help him or even go look for h when he didn’t show up home even though I am in another state now and because of that I lost him

    Memories – Maroon 5

I don’t really know if this counts but about two months ago I lost my childhood horse who had been my best friend since everything and the line “cheers to the wish you were here but you’re not” hits pretty hard since I don’t remember the last time he when he wasn’t here that I wish he was.

I lost a friend in 1993. He was only 19 years old when he was instantly killed in a horrific road traffic accident.
After all these years, little things will trigger my memories of him and the grief and pain washes over me, as raw today, as it was when I first heard he was gone forever.

Music has always been a form of solace to me to get through these times. Here’s a few of the heart felt songs I find comfort in:

Brothers in Arms – Dire Straits
One Sweet Day – Mariah Carey
Never Forget You – Mariah Carey
    Angel – Eurythmics
Never Tear Us Apart – INXS
This Used To Be My Playground – Madonna
That’s What Friends Are For – Dionne Warwick

And the song that will remain ours for eternity:
The Arms of Orion – Prince & Sheena Easton.

I’ve read through everyone’s comments, and I lament along with you, but I’ve done that in one or the other ever since I can remember remembering. I also find a great deal of solace in music, as it often stands off the loneliness I most often times feel, and it is my favorite medium of art most likely even though I’m a painter. Although, it’s not generally my “cuppa” a recent loss has me listening to “Drink a Beer” by Luke Brian and I’m quite literally doing that along with my lost friend, even though I’m not a big fan. I still have one with at the end of the day most days since he’s been gone . It’s perfectly normal to feel completely lost during times like these, especially considering some of the stories I’ve read here, just realize you won’t stay that way. Much love to all!!! ✌️

On March 16th, it will be 3 years since she left us, Danny Boy, Roy Orbison, for my son, he’s been gone for 19 years now. It still hurts! I miss both my kids, so much! 🙁

    If You Remember Me
    Chris Thompson

    When you remember me,
    If you remember me,
I hope you see it’s not the way I wanted to be,
Or I’d be with you now,
    But wherever you go,
    My love goes with you
    Keep on smiling,
    Keep on shinning,
Even though you know you want to cry
    I tried to love you
    Looking in my eyes,
    You saw promises in life,
    Too many times
    When you remember me,
    If you remember me,
I hope you see it’s not the way I wanted to be,
Or I’d be with you now,
    But wherever you go,
    My love goes with you
    I’ll be with you,
    Keep believing,
Some things even time can’t come between,
    And if you blame me,
    Try and realize,
    There were promises and lies
    too many times
    When you remember me,
    If you remember me,
I hope you see it’s not the way I wanted to be,
Or I’d be with you now,
    But wherever you go,
    My love goes with you,
Oh my love goes with you

You are not Alone and Man in the Mirror. My friend passed away earlier this year. These were played at vigil and funeral. He was a michael Jackson finatic, so these songs really help me through. Fly High Andrew McMorris. My grandpa also just died recently, Goodnight my angel by billy joel helps me, it was played at his funeral.

My best friend just took his own life. This is what I am listening to:

    1) Get Out of the Car – Aesop Rock (He lost his best friend and wrote this for him 8 years later)
    2) Lovelife – Atmosphere (Lyrics are amazing if you have lost someone)
    3) Flicker – Atmosphere (What he wrote when his “lil brother” Eyedea passed away)
    4) Friend of a Friend – Foo Fighters (Dave Grohl wrote this for Kurt Cobain)
    5) By the Throat – Eyedea & Abilities (A heavy song, but the lyrics are incredible)
    6) Here for You – Oliver Hart (To the tee if you lost someone)
    7) Zicky’s Song – Pepper
    8) Adam’s Song – Blink-182 (Song made about a kid that committed suicide)

Here are just a few, I could add another 100. Some of these are hip-hop and may not be your favorite style but before dismissing them, please read the lyrics.

Malibu by Hole was one of my dads favorite songs and it makes me cry every time i hear it. Especially the end where she sings,
“I cant be near you. The light just radiates.”
Like i cant be near him right now because i gotta be stuck on this shit hole planet and tbe light of heaven just radiates, blindingly.
On a different musical note, i just heard this song recently and it reminds me of my cousin who committed suicide earlier this year in May. I had just seen him two days prior to him taking his own life so this song really tears me up. Its called Last Chance by ABK (AnyBodyKilla)

Check out http://www.beforetheirtime.org , a 6-CD series with songs donated by 80 artists about all aspects of loss and grief, compiled by a grieving father, which has raised over $60,000 for suicide prevention. All the songs were inspired by the artists’ personal experience, and only 10 or so relate to suicide. All the songs are strikingly beautiful and memorable in the messages of hope they carry, reminding listeners that we CAN survive these grievous losses.
