The Youtube Cure for the Christmas Blues

We have spent a lot of time this month talking about ideas for coping with holiday grief and hopefully some of them helped.  Maybe?  But even with all the planning and mental preparation in the world there is no escaping the fact that Christmas Day after a death is especially painful, following a month that has probably been especially painful.   You are probably well aware if you have spent any time around here that Eleanor and I have a coping tool we both love, that we didn’t learn in grad school.  It isn’t part of any therapeutic approach.  It is not exactly revolutionary: watching happy clips on the internet.   That’s right, when all else fails to bring a smile to my face, a good flash mob or movie clip can remind me that I am still capable of smiling.  In case you have forgotten from the million other times we have mentioned it, smiling (even when you fake it) actually releases chemicals in your brain that make you feel better.  For real.  There is scientific proof

So this Christmas morning I will be getting my day going with some feel-good, funny, absurd, and otherwise happy holiday clips to get me smiling and to serve as a reminder to look for the happy parts of today, rather focusing on the sad.   Sharing our favorite clips, because if you made it here to our blog on Christmas we think you might be looking to kick some of those Christmas blues.  If you get through these clips and are looking for some more smiles and feel-good clips, don’t miss our Thanksgiving post and our Mother’s Day post where we have tons more cheer-you-up-internet-goodness.

Charlie Brown Christmas Flash Mob in NYC

When it comes to things that would cheer me up today, there may be no two better things than Peanuts and a flash mob.  Here it is, all wrapped in one.  Thanks Mashable!!

A Christmas Story

I was going to try to pick a favorite clip, but that just seemed impossible. Why pick when TBS will be showing this on loop ALL DAY on Christmas Day? So instead here is the trailer and you can catch the full movie, on loop.

Muppets: Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas

TLC’s Sleigh Ride

Refinery 29 did a list of the best celebrity holiday videos that time forgot and started the list with this song.  I will never understand why this did not become a holiday standby. Just sayin.

Wrappingville: Justin Timberlake/Jimmy Fallon SNL skit

Dog is Thrilled with Simple Christmas Present

We all know I am a sucker for a cute dog video.

Funny Dogs Opening Christmas Presents Compilation 2013

Alvin and the Chipmunks: Christmas Don’t Be Late Montage

We blog about grief in our free time.  Others make montages of Alvin and the Chipmunks singing their Christmas song, and I couldn’t be more grateful to those people!

The Nightmare Before Christmas: Christmas Town

This might be my favorite Christmas movie ever.

Edward Scissorhands: Ice Dance Scene

The Nightmare Before Christmas is my favorite, unless you count Edward Scissorhands  as a Christmas movie.  Then maybe that’s my favorite.  Have I mentioned I love Tim Burton?

Christmas Surprise Military Homecomings

If these don’t make you laugh and cry all at once, I just don’t know what will.
